Keys to Spring Fly Fishing

Because our team at Fin River Gear loves to get on the river year-round, we know that to fish effectively, it is important for an angler to adapt. Some seasons are relatively simple (in summer, dry flies; winter, tiny nymphs). The spring unfortunately is as tough as it gets. This time of year, not only can the weather change in minutes but what the fish are focused on can change just as quickly, not to mention the need to watch out for Redds (see our last post about spawning trout).

There is no perfect playlist to be successful on the water in the spring but here is a list of a few of the things our Fin River Gear team won’t forget during the spring and an article from Vail Valley Anglers on spring fishing that provides some more details.

  • Clothing for anything from snowing and 20 degrees to sunny and 80

  • Wind layers (it’s always windy in the spring)

  • Knowledge of the river flows (some rivers can get so blown out they aren’t fishable)

  • A wide selection of flies (all the small nymphs, big dark streamers, flash back flies, big Pats Rubber Legs, worms/eggs, and smaller dry flies)

  • Lots of weight and tippet so you can change your rig frequently.
