There are many aspects to a successful day on the water. Ultimately, a good day fly fishing is all about the fish, but getting those fish into the net takes a lot of work and knowledge. The internet and YouTube provide an invaluable resource and should not be ignored, but the most important resource available to almost everyone that should never be overlooked: your local fly shop.

Like a good bar, there is no better feeling than walking into a fly shop where everyone knows your name. For experienced anglers it’s common to have a shop you frequent and be on a first name basis with both the staff and the shop dog. But it’s easy to forget how daunting it can be as a novice your first time stepping out of the fishing aisle of a Walmart and into a real fly shop.
